3-vehicle crash topples 18-wheeler carrying tons of ham

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY — A Tuesday night auto accident involving an overturned tractor-trailer carrying over 20 tons of ham, the vehicle of on-duty sheriff’s deputy and a truck travelling without headlights resulted in all drivers hospitalized and the road of the crash being shut down.

Virginia State Police said the accident occurred around the intersection of Five Forks Road and U.S. Route 258, or Courthouse Highway. That’s roughly two miles from Windsor.

State police say the Isle of Wight sheriff’s deputy struck the truck without its headlights driving on Route 258 traveling southbound. The tractor-trailer hauling 44,000 pounds of ham traveling northbound on Route 258 attempted to avoid the crash of the other two vehicles, state police said, and was run off the road onto the truck’s side in a ditch. The three drivers of the involved vehicles were transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Troopers said the pork would “need to be unloaded” from the tractor-trailer.

State police said the road’s closure has caused a major delay for those traveling on it. A detour was in place Wednesday morning and state police were investigating the crash.

Troopers are still investigating the crash’s cause, authorities said. No further details were immediately available.
