A Panama First for the City of Health: CSS Performs Robotic Bariatric Surgery

The Social Security Fund (CSS) reported that surgeons at the City of Health successfully performed the first robotic-assisted gastric bypass in Panama, marking an important advance in surgical procedures against severe obesity.  The Social Security Fund detailed that the intervention was performed on a patient over 40 years old and weighing close to 300 pounds.  The procedure was performed using a robotic platform that allows for more precise movements, less bleeding, and greater safety during surgery.

The operation consisted of reducing the size of the stomach and connecting a more distant section of the small intestine, a technique commonly used for the treatment of morbid obesity.  Among the benefits of this type of surgery are a shorter time under anesthesia, less postoperative pain, faster recovery, and a considerable reduction in bleeding.  Digestive and robotic surgeon José Miguel Cabada explained that one of the main advances is the reduction of surgical time compared to traditional laparoscopy, which can last between two and three hours.  The CSS also announced that this technology could be used in the future to develop robotic telesurgery from other medical facilities in the country, facilitating access to specialized procedures for patients in the interior and helping to reduce the surgical backlog.
