The Ministry of Youth and Sports has already submitted its budget proposal to the Ministry of Financce and is now preparing for one-on-one consultations as part of the next stage of the national budget process.
Assistant Minister Aliki Bia says they understand that every allocation requested must be fully justified, with ministries expected to show that last year’s funding was used according to plan before any increase can be considered.
He adds that where there is insufficient justification, discussions will be held on whether a ministry’s budget should be reduced or adjusted for the new financial year.
“We’ve already made a budget submission to the Ministry of Finance and the Minister responsible and I guess the last process that we have now is the one-to-one consultation with each ministry on how they will go about their budget. But, you know, in allocating budget in every financial year, the onus is on the ministry to justify every allocation that is allocated to them in the last financial year.
So if you are able to justify it and you ask for an increase, they will go back to the justification that you have, that you used the funds allocated from last year according to what was planned for. And if there’s no justification, then there will be discussions as to why you will increase your budget or why it will be decreased.”
