Data centers, utility bills and a tax break under fire in Ohio

You can be sure that JobsOhio, the state’s quasi-private job creation agency, had a hand in Ohio’s sales-tax exemption for data centers. And you can be equally sure that Gov. Mike DeWine and the GOP-led state legislature handed out that exemption without understanding just how much it would cost the state — let alone citizens faced with soaring utility bills, water consumption, and noise pollution.

Now, suddenly, the legislature has decided that a bipartisan committee needs to look into this — no doubt in an effort to share the blame. And on Wednesday, DeWine “paused” the tax credit after it cost the state an unexpected $1.5 billion (“DeWine pauses tax break after billion-dollar forecasting miss,” May 28).
