Concord Crew marks 25 years with rowing celebration

Etienne Follomon spoke three words, in order and in reverse. Legs, body, arms. Arms, body, legs.

Parents who had never rowed hopped in boats with their kids and gave it a shot. Follomon was on the motorized launch to make sure they could make it back to the dock.

Concord Crew hosted an alumni and open house rowing day to celebrate 25 years on Saturday morning. Burgers and sausages sizzled on the grill as smoke wafted down to the docks for hungry rowers.

Head Coach Steve Garside and Board President Christine Graham addressed the hungry crowd of friends and teammates to revisit some history.

Graham mentioned a few fun facts. The Crew has 18 programs, 22 boats, 11 sets of oars, 32 scullers. The Crew has had as many as 111 kids in one season. As many as 37 coaches and sent over 20 kids to nationals. 22,144 breakfast sandwiches assembled, at least, she said.

Garside reminded the group how grateful he is for the full support of everyone involved, and the generous work of everyone before him.

“I can’t thank everybody for coming out and always being part of it, and just helping out,” he told them.

Whether a beginner or an expert, everybody rowed or watched next to the boathouse.
