The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Grenada has issued an urgent maritime safety advisory, calling for heightened precautions among Grenadian seafarers operating in regional waters.
The advisory, released Friday, comes amid what the ministry describes as “recent developments involving maritime navigation in the region,” though specific details of these developments were not disclosed.
They are reminding Grenadian shipping operators, vessel owners, and crew members to conduct comprehensive maintenance and seaworthiness checks before departing on any voyage. The ministry emphasized that all navigational, mechanical, and emergency systems must be fully operational before vessels leave port.
The advisory places particular emphasis on territorial water boundaries, urging operators to maintain clear understanding of regional maritime limits and avoid entering foreign territorial waters without proper authorization. Any mechanical failures or distress situations must be promptly reported to appropriate national and international maritime authorities.
Beyond standard safety protocols, the ministry is calling for “heightened vigilance” when navigating near territorial waters of neighbouring states. All crew members should be thoroughly briefed on emergency protocols before departure, according to the advisory.
The ministry cited “current sensitivities” as the reason for advising maritime personnel to “proceed with increased caution and responsibility,” though it did not elaborate on the nature of these regional tensions. “The ministry underscored the importance of adhering to international maritime safety protocols and calls on all stakeholders to exercise collective vigilance in preventing avoidable incidents,” the statement read.
