The Story so far: As post-poll violence grips West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee is staring at defeat from her bastion Bhabanipur at the hands of her aide-turned-rival Suvendu Adhikari on May 4, 2026. Voted out of power for the first time since 2011, Trinamool Congress has been reduced to its lowest tally since then – 80 seats in the 294-seat Assembly. BJP has swept the state winning a single majority of 206 seats.

Marred by the exclusion of 90 lakh voters from the electoral rolls due to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), Trinamool Congress accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of disenfranchising its vote base. The biggest upsets in these polls too have been suffered by Trinamool – Mamata Banerjee, former Power minister Aroop Biswas, actress Shrreya Pande. Other significant losers are parties – Left parties and Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM.
