Daniel Frank Gawenda
Cody, WY – Daniel Frank Gawenda, age 87, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2026, in Cody, Wyoming. He was born on July 21, 1938, in South Bend, Indiana to Frank and Mary Gawenda.
Daniel graduated from Purdue University in 1959 with a degree in civil engineering. He worked 28 years with Davis & Floyd in Charleston, South Carolina, where he served as a Senior Associate and Lead Engineer. Throughout his career, Daniel was respected for his professionalism, intelligence, strong work ethic, and commitment to excellence in his field.
Daniel will be remembered most for his devotion to family, his love for golf, his quiet strength, and his caring nature. He touched the lives of many through his kindness, wisdom, and steady presence.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Irene Gawenda; his parents, Frank and Mary Gawenda; and his brother, Gerald Gawenda.
Daniel is survived by his loving wife, Janet Whitmire Gawenda of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; his daughter, Laurie Hipwell and Richard Hipwell of Cody, Wyoming; his stepsons, Buck Whitmire and his wife Connie Whitmire, and Robert Whitmire of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; Stepsons, Jerry Shank of Lynne, Florida, and Jeffery Shank and his wife Anita of Goshen, Indiana and their son, Jeffery Shank Jr and his wife of Denver, Colorado; along with extended family members and dear friends who will miss him greatly.
Those who knew Daniel will remember a man of integrity, dedication, and compassion whose legacy lives on in the family he loved and the many lives he influenced throughout his long and meaningful life.
A private family remembrance will be held in his honor.
