Tourist permits cancelled; 2000 stranded

Heavy rainfall has triggered multiple landslides in North Sikkim, leading to the cancellation of all tourist permits to Lachen and Lachung. Online permits will not be issued today, and all previously approved permits stand cancelled.

According to Mangan District Collector, Anant Jain, around 2,000 tourists who had travelled over the last two days are currently stranded. The most affected area is the Phidang–Chungthang route, where landslides occurred late last night due to continuous rain.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) are working to clear the road, with road restoration expected within two hours. Authorities have assured that all stranded tourists will be safely brought back to Gangtok by this afternoon.
