Driver at ‘high rate of speed’ swerves to avoid spike strips, dies in crash, UHP says

ELSINORE, Sevier County — A driver crashed and died Tuesday night after swerving to avoid spike strips set by troopers who were trying to stop the driver due to speed, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

The vehicle initially drove up behind a trooper at a “high rate of speed” on eastbound I-70 near Elsinore in Sevier County, UHP Lt. Cameron Roden said. The trooper let the vehicle go by and then tried to stop the vehicle, but it continued and accelerated at a “high rate of speed,” Roden said.

Troopers spiked the vehicle, but it continued at a high rate of speed. Troopers again tried to spike it a few miles later, but the driver tried to avoid the spike stripes by swerving to the right, Roden said.

The vehicle went off the road and rolled, ejecting the driver. Troopers attempted lifesaving measures, and a medical helicopter responded, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

No information about the driver has been released.

The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
