Kadirur panchayat in Kannur bags Atma Nirbhar award

Kadirur grama panchayat in Kannur has secured the third position nationally in the ‘Atma Nirbhar Panchayat Special Award’ category of the National Panchayat Awards 2026 announced by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. The award recognises achievements during the 2024-25 appraisal year. Kadirur was selected from among nearly 2.68 lakh panchayats across the country.

The panchayat earned recognition for its comprehensive initiatives in poverty alleviation, healthcare, women empowerment, waste management, infrastructure, and good governance. Through agriculture-based schemes, Kudumbashree activities, and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), the panchayat strengthened livelihood opportunities and reduced the number of Below Poverty Line families from 1,917 in 2009 to 1,440 in 2021-22, with only 38 families remaining in extreme poverty.

Kadirur has 3,146 Kudumbashree members in 219 neighbourhood groups and has facilitated loans and subsidies worth more than ₹16 crore. Under MGNREGS, 48,482 workdays were generated in 2024-25, while 17 houses were constructed through the LIFE housing scheme.

The panchayat also received appreciation for its healthcare network, which includes a family health centre, six sub-centres, Ayurveda and homeo dispensaries, and palliative care services.

Kadirur achieved the first place in the State’s Clean and Green Panchayat rankings in 2022 and 2025. The Haritha Karma Sena ensures 100% monthly plastic waste collection from households, while watershed cleaning campaigns were conducted with large-scale public participation.

The panchayat has also implemented child-friendly and women-friendly initiatives, including smart anganwadis, Buds School for differently abled children, gender resource centres, self-defence training for girls and support programmes for elderly women.

An ISO 9001:2015 certified local body, Kadirur was also recognised for transparent governance, digital file processing systems, public help desks, and extensive welfare infrastructure.
