The Royal Anguilla Police Force (RAPF) has launched an investigation into recent maritime accidents and issued a stern warning to vessel operators following reports of unsafe practices in the territory’s coastal waters.
The police force announced that multiple incidents involving dangerous vessel operations have prompted increased enforcement efforts, with authorities expressing concern over risks posed to passengers and other maritime users around the island.
The operation of vessels is governed by the Merchant Shipping Act of Anguilla, which outlines clear safety standards, navigation rules, and operational requirements.
According to the police statement, “Non-compliance with these provisions may result in prosecution, fines, imprisonment, and the detention or removal of vessels deemed unsafe or unlawfully operated.” The RAPF emphasized that its Marine Unit is actively monitoring coastal and nearshore marine activity as part of increased enforcement efforts.
The police force warned that “any individual found in contravention of the Act will face the full extent of enforcement under the law.”
Authorities also reminded vessel operators of specific requirements including operating only seaworthy and properly equipped vessels, complying with speed and navigation rules, using appropriate lighting and safety equipment, and never operating vessels under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
