Bank of Zambia warns public against use of old banknotes

The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has warned members of the public against the continued use of old banknotes, stating that the notes were no longer legal tender and cannot be used for any form of transaction.

The warning forms part of ongoing efforts by the central bank to protect the public from fraud and strengthen confidence in the country’s financial system.

In a public awareness message issued as part of its anti-fraud campaign, the central bank cautioned that continued circulation and use of old banknotes was illegal and could expose unsuspecting members of the public to scams and fraudulent activities.

BoZ has since urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid accepting outdated currency notes from individuals attempting to conduct trade or other financial transactions.

The central bank further advised members of the public to report anyone found presenting old banknotes for trade to the nearest police station, the Drug Enforcement Commission or the Bank of Zambia.

The old banknotes ceased to be legal tender and become unusable after March 31, 2026.
