Weather alert issued for elevated fire danger in Northern Michigan until Saturday evening

A weather alert was issued by the National Weather Service on Saturday at 3:48 a.m. EDT for elevated fire danger until 8 p.m. EDT for Emmet, Cheboygan, Presque Isle, Leelanau, Antrim, Otsego, Montmorency, Alpena, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Crawford, Oscoda, Alcona, Manistee, Wexford, Missaukee, Roscommon, Ogemaw, Iosco, Gladwin, Arenac and Charlevoix counties.

“Combination of dry surface conditions, low afternoon relative humidity values, and gusty west to northwest winds will result in elevated fire danger conditions across northern lower Michigan today. Sustained winds of 10 to 18 mph with occasional gusts of 20 to 30 mph will be seen over northern Michigan late this morning through this afternoon. Minimum relative humidity values of 25 to 35% are expected over much of northern lower Michigan. These conditions could lead to rapid spread of fires. Check burning restrictions and fire danger before burning,” describes the weather service.
