Badhan (WDN)- Deadly clan clashes have erupted in Carmale, near the city of Erigavo in the Sanaag region, resulting in heavy casualties and escalating tensions across the area.

According to local reports, fierce fighting broke out between two sub-clan of Warsangeli, leaving at least 40 people dead amid one of the most serious outbreaks of violence witnessed in the region in recent years. The clashes are said to have caused significant destruction and displacement, with fears growing that the conflict could further destabilize the already fragile area.

Sources indicate that the violence stems from a previous dispute over land and territorial boundaries, compounded by unresolved grievances and retaliatory killings between the two sides. Despite previous reconciliation attempts, community elders and local mediators reportedly failed to secure a lasting settlement, leaving tensions simmering beneath the surface. Both groups involved in the fighting are said to belong to the Warsangeli clan community.

In response to the deteriorating security situation, Puntland security forces were reportedly deployed to Carmale to act as a neutral force aimed at separating the warring sides, restoring stability, and facilitating peace efforts. The forces are expected to work alongside traditional elders and community leaders to push the rival sub-clans toward an immediate ceasefire and prevent further bloodshed.

The renewed violence has intensified calls for urgent intervention by traditional elders, regional authorities, and peace actors to revive meaningful reconciliation efforts before the conflict spirals further and claims more lives.
