The New Hampshire Fisher Cats scored twice in the 10th inning off position player Caden Rose — working his third inning on the mound — as they completed a doubleheader sweep Thursday with a 7-5 win over the Portland Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field.
New Hampshire won 4-2 in the opener.
Rose, normally an outfielder, entered in the eighth inning of what was supposed to be a seven-inning game, making his first professional appearance as a pitcher. He allowed the automatic runner to score in both the eighth and ninth but avoided any further damage, and the Sea Dogs tied the game both times, on a pinch-hit RBI single by Miguel Bleis in the eighth and a throwing error in the ninth. They couldn’t push across the winning run, however, despite having runners on second and third with nobody out.
Portland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap. Franklin Arias led off with a single and Will Turner followed with his third home run of the season. Ronald Rosario then reached on a single and scored all the way from first when a ball hit by Max Ferguson deflected off diving second baseman Nick Goodwin and rolled into shallow right field.
The Fisher Cats, though, answered with two runs in the second and tied it in the fifth.
Sea Dogs starting pitcher Caleb Bowden lasted only 3 1/3 innings despite striking out eight and giving up just one earned run.
In Game 1, the Fisher Cats scored three runs in the third inning, and starting pitcher Gage Stanifer pitched five scoreless innings.
Portland scored its runs in the seventh on a double-play grounder with the bases loaded and an error.
