A delivery driver had one of his legs amputated after a serious crash in Sliema on Wednesday morning, allegedly caused by a drunk driver.
According to a report by Times of Malta, 33-year-old Ahmed Tahruni pleaded not guilty in court to multiple charges, including causing grievous injuries through dangerous driving, driving without a licence or insurance, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and providing police with incorrect details.
Police inspector Clive Abela told the court that officers on routine patrol along the Strand at around 7:20am came across a serious collision involving a Y-plate car and a van.
The 57-year-old victim from St Paul’s Bay was reportedly trapped between the two vehicles before being given first aid and transported to Mater Dei Hospital.
The court heard that the victim later underwent a leg amputation, while surgeons were reportedly attempting to save his second leg.
Police also told the court that a breathalyser test on the accused allegedly returned a reading of 131.8. Y-plate drivers are required to have zero alcohol in their system.
The prosecution objected to bail, arguing the accused was a flight risk and highlighting the seriousness of the victim’s condition. Bail was ultimately denied.
Is enough being done to stop drunk driving?
