Cracks Inside Villa Somalia Alliance as Galmudug Rift Raises Fears of New Political Confrontation

Mogadishu (WDN) – Somalia’s rapidly deteriorating political crisis has entered a dangerous new phase after a sudden power struggle erupted between President Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qoorqoor) of Galmudug state, and President Hassan Sh. Mohamud, exposing what many observers now describe as deep fractures inside President Hassan’s once tightly controlled political alliance.

President Qoorqoor, a key member of President Hassan’s Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP), stood firmly behind President Hassan’s agenda of pushing through constitutional changes and forcefully accelerating the unliteral transition toward a one-person, one-vote electoral model by any means necessary. However, relations between the two have now sharply deteriorated, exposing growing fractures.

Qoorqoor has openly rejected a newly appointed Galmudug police commander imposed by the federal government, while simultaneously refusing to recognize the dismissal of the previous commander. The dispute, centered on control of the regional security apparatus, has quickly evolved into a broader political standoff carrying echoes of Somalia’s previous federal-state clashes.

Political analysts say the dispute is not simply about police leadership. It is increasingly being viewed as evidence of a widening collapse in relations between Villa Somalia and one of its most important regional allies at a moment when the country is already engulfed in electoral turmoil, mass displacement, anti-government protests, and growing public anger.

“This is no longer a hidden disagreement,” a Galmudug  political observer told WardheerNews. “The cracks inside the system are now fully visible.” For months, rumors had circulated in Mogadishu that relations between President Hassan Sheikh and Qoor Qoor were becoming strained behind closed doors. Those suspicions intensified after the federal government reportedly hesitated to formally endorse Qoorqoor as the ruling JSP party’s preferred candidate in Galmudug’s upcoming presidential election.

Now, many fear the standoff could spiral into a political confrontation similar to the crisis that unfolded in South West State, where tensions between Villa Somalia and former regional president Abdiaziz Hassan (Laftagareen) eventually escalated into open conflict and a forceful removal from power. The fear in Galmudug is that the same playbook is beginning to unfold again.

The timing of the crisis could hardly be more explosive. Somalia’s political climate is already dangerously unstable, with opposition groups preparing mass demonstrations in Mogadishu, accusations of forced displacement and land seizures dominating headlines, and disputes over the controversial one-person, one-vote electoral model pushing the country deeper into division.

The emergence of a new federal-state confrontation threatens to further destabilize an already fragile political landscape. Adding to the intrigue is the involvement of Sadiq John, one of Somalia’s most influential police commanders and long regarded as a close ally of President Hassan Sheikh. Sadiq John has now reportedly aligned himself with the Galmudug administration, a move widely interpreted as a significant political signal inside Somalia’s security establishment.

His alignment with Qoorqoor is already fueling speculation that powerful figures within the state apparatus may be quietly distancing themselves from Villa Somalia as uncertainty deepens around the federal leadership. The unfolding tensions come with only seven days remaining in the current federal government’s mandate — a reality that is intensifying fears of political fragmentation and institutional paralysis.

Critics accuse President Hassan Sheikh of attempting to tighten control over the federal member states through disputed electoral processes, contested appointments, and centralized authority, while regional leaders increasingly appear unwilling to surrender political autonomy.

What was once presented as a stable alliance between the federal government and Galmudug now appears to be unraveling in public view. As mistrust deepens and political tempers rise across the country, Somalia once again finds itself staring at the familiar specter of internal confrontation — this time from within the very coalition that once claimed it would stabilize the nation.
