Majuro Atoll Waste Company has a few things to celebrate, and it did just that last week Thursday with an event at the landfill site in Batkan.
With the support of the Asian Development Bank, MAWC has received an important piece of heavy equipment that will assist it as it closes up the dump area in Batkan as part of preparation for moving to a new site in the downtown area.
A heavy duty compactor was on display at the landfill, and MAWC staff were receiving training for operation and maintaining it. The new compactor will be used to compact the waste on the lagoon side property so that more of the mountain of trash on the ocean side can be brought across to the lagoon side location, said MAWC General Manager Halston deBrum.
In addition, the lagoon side area is being fenced off as part of the ADB-funded project, and a new warehouse is to be built for housing and maintaining the waste company’s equipment.
