The Labour Party is set to announce the “best foreign investment in the history of the country” in the coming days, Robert Abela revealed late Tuesday evening as he pledged a set of new proposals aimed specifically at youth.
Addressing the Labour Youths as they launched their campaign themed “Good politics for our future”, Abela did not elaborate further on this “investment”, simply hinting that it will be in a “sector that is value-added”.
Moving on specifically to address his young crowd near Fort St Angelo, the PL leader proposed an “Arts Pass” worth €200 for all young adults to attend cultural activities. The pass would apply for events like concerts, exhibitions, theatrical productions, films and fashion shows.
The culture pass which targets secondary school students and younger children will also be strengthened, he added.
Abela also promised that a government led by him would introduce new mental health services in post-secondary schools and the university.
“At MCAST, Junior College, and the University of Malta, students will be able to participate in workshops on stress, sleep and time management,” he said, explaining that workshops would take place in peer support groups.
Students will also be able to access individual therapy if they experience a lot of anxiety, depression, have gone through a trauma or have an eating disorder.
At the event, Abela said the government’s manifesto is “so attractive to young people because it was written by young people”.
He listed several of the proposals the party has made for young people including a pledge to increase student stipends by a further 15 per cent, and a promise to give students going on an overseas study programme like Erasmus a €1,000 grant.
