The Greenwood baseball team set the tone from the opening pitch in Wednesday’s 10-5 win over Bowling Green at Bowling Green High School.
Greenwood (16-8 overall, 2-1 District 14) got off to a hot start and was able to hold back a charge from the Purples to secure the win in the opener of a two-game series between the district rivals.
“I’m super proud of our guys,” Greenwood coach Jason Jaggers said. “Again I think it is senior leadership, sophomores stepping up – especially in the dugout. I am super proud of the collective team win right there.”
Greenwood scored five runs in the first – opening with two walks and an RBI double from Kioshi Une. After a groundout, the next three batters reached – including an RBI single Griffin Veazey and a bases-loaded walk to Ethan York that chased BG starter Jack Cowan.
John Kincaid greeted the new pitcher with an RBI single and Sam Holder capped the first-inning rally with a sacrifice fly that made the score 5-0.
“When the boys showed up today to the field for our pregame they just had a different look in their eyes,” Jaggers said. “They were extremely focused. It’s a credit to our seniors again, the leadership they are showing.”
Holder added a bases-loaded walk to give the Gators a six-run lead in the top of the third before Bowling Green (20-4, 2-1) answered in the bottom of the inning.
Landon Gilbert got the Purples on the board with a sacrifice fly and Logan Johnson added a two-run single to trim the deficit to 6-3. Bowling Green added two more runs in the fourth to inch closer, before Greenwood was able to get some distance again.
A bases-loaded walk to Jackson Lee and an RBI single by Whitt Glosick highlighted a three-run fifth inning rally that made the score 9-5. Kincaid capped the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth.
“We were doing what we could to get on base and score runs,” Kincaid said. “We needed to execute and deep in the count we needed to fight and get on base.”
Kincaid led the way with three hits. Six Gators recorded at least one hit, with Une driving in a pair and Henry Justice adding two runs scored.
“One through nine, I felt like we swung it well,” Jaggers said. “If somebody is not having a great night, it seems like somebody else is able to step up. We’ve got confidence in all of our guys.”
Glosick earned the win, allowing three runs in three innings, while Lee earned the save allowing two unearned runs in four innings.
John Mosley and James Yarbrough had two hits each to pace the BG offense. The pitching staff surrendered nine walks that led directly to five runs.
“You can’t win a game in the first inning, but you can lose one and dig yourself a hole,” BG coach Nathan Isenberg said. “That’s what we did tonight. We’ve got a good club. I think we came out too tight, trying to do too much. The game of baseball is hard enough. We’ve stressed being undefeated in preparation. You can’t control the outcome. You can’t control the results, but you can control the process and everything. I don’t think we did a good job doing that.”
