The United Democratic Party (UDP) has accused the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) of promoting tribal rhetoric and ethnic polarization, warning that such practices could undermine The Gambia’s peaceful coexistence and national security.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the UDP called on Gambians to reject division and uphold national unity and democratic integrity, alleging that the NPP has been inconsistent in its political narratives.
The opposition party referenced past political statements allegedly made by former NPP National President, the late Dembo “By Force,” during a rally in Bakau in the presence of President Adama Barrow. According to the UDP, Dembo claimed that if UDP leader Ousainou Darboe were elected, he would expel non-Mandinka groups from The Gambia.
The UDP further alleged that senior NPP officials at the time repeated similar claims, portraying Darboe as a tribalist and anti-foreigner, assertions it said formed part of the party’s campaign messaging.
The party also cited remarks allegedly made at a political rally in Kiang by Maimuna Ceesay Darboe, described as a nominated National Assembly Member aligned with the presidency, who claimed that the UDP had previously facilitated the entry of foreign nationals from Guinea-Bissau and neighboring countries to influence elections.
The UDP added that the same official alleged that if Darboe were elected president, he would favour non-Mandinka groups over Mandinkas, accusations the party described as divisive and unfounded.
“Gambia, the contradiction is clear. When one narrative fails, it is replaced with another. This pattern reflects a lack of consistent policy direction and an overreliance on divisive rhetoric rooted in tribalism and ethnic polarization,” the UDP said in the statement.
It added that such rhetoric threatens social cohesion and peaceful coexistence, urging citizens to resist divisive politics and prioritize national unity.
The UDP further states that its leader, Ousainou Darboe, presents a vision focused on reconciliation and national renewal, including proposals for a one-term presidency, a new constitution, and reforms in the economic, security, and civil service sectors, aimed at fostering stability and inclusiveness.
