Burundi buries media minister after state funeral in Bujumbura

Burundi has laid to rest its Minister of Communication and Media, Gabby Bugaga, following a state funeral attended by senior government officials, including President Évariste Ndayishimiye.

Bugaga, whose death is said to have been caused by a car crash was confirmed by the government a fortnight ago, was honoured during prayers held at the Cathedral Regina Mundi in Bujumbura before his body was transported for burial in Mpanda.

The ceremony drew top state officials, reflecting Bugaga’s role within government and the significance of his office at a time when Burundi is navigating media reforms and preparing for the 2027 elections.

In an official statement earlier, authorities described the minister’s death as “sudden,” following a road accident.

Bugaga had served as communications minister since August 2025, overseeing government media policy and relations with both public and private outlets. His tenure coincided with gradual adjustments to Burundi’s press framework after years of restrictions that intensified following the 2015 political crisis.

Before joining the cabinet, he worked in journalism and held several public communications roles, including within the National Assembly and Senate.
