With five weeks until the primary elections, the five candidates will participate in a forum Tuesday night in the City of Vision.
RIO RANCHO, N.M. — The five candidates running for governor in New Mexico will participate in a forum Tuesday night in Rio Rancho.
Three Republicans – Former Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull, businessman Duke Rodriguez and Doug Turner – and two Democrats – Former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland and Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman – will participate in the forum.
Last week, the candidates mainly focused on economic issues during a forum in Santa Fe. They also discussed child care programs and each candidate talked about how to address the state’s housing shortage.
- Duke Rodriguez: “We just don’t have the right products being built in the right places and for the right price.”
- Deb Haaland: “The state can absolutely work with municipalities to to make zoning laws more favorable to families.”
- Doug Turner: “We have to also have an environment where municipalities work with developers so it’s easy to develop. That is a big problem.”
- Sam Bregman: “I think we need to put local communities on a shot clock. We need to say, ‘you’ve got this length of time to approve or disapprove.’”
- Gregg Hull: “We need better investments in roads. We need better investments in police and fire services that make these communities attractive to developers to build homes in.”
Exactly five weeks after Tuesday are the primary elections for each party June 2. That will determine which Democrat and which Republican will move on to face Ken Miyagishima in November. This year, New Mexico’s independent or unaffiliated voters can vote in either primary but not both.
Miyagishima, who was running as a Democrat, is now running as an independent.
Tuesday’s forum will take place at Rio Rancho Public Schools’ training center room on Laser Road. The Nonpartisan League of Women Voters will moderate that event, set to start at 6 p.m.
