Under the first phase of the 2027 Census in Uttarakhand, the work of house listing and house enumeration is set to commence today—April 25, 2026. As part of this process, enumerators will visit households door-to-door to collect responses to a set of 33 designated questions, recording the complete information directly onto a dedicated application on the spot.
House Listing and Enumeration Work to Begin on April 25
Under the first phase of the 2027 Census in Uttarakhand, the task of house listing and enumeration is scheduled to begin on April 25. In light of this, the Directorate of Census Operations has completed all necessary preparations. The state has been demarcated into districts and municipal corporation areas to facilitate the execution of the house listing and enumeration process.
To this end, distinct mapping exercises have been conducted for different areas. Furthermore, separate “House Listing Blocks” have been delineated based on the respective districts and municipal corporations. The rationale behind this approach is that the District Magistrates have been designated as the Principal Census Officers for all areas excluding the municipal corporation limits, while the Municipal Commissioners have been appointed as the Principal Census Officers for their respective municipal corporation areas.

When was the first census conducted in India
It is noteworthy that the first census in India took place in the year 1872. The first census after independence was completed in the year 1951. However, due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the 2021 Census could not be conducted. The 2027 Census marks India’s 16th census and the 8th census since independence.
