The Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) Digital Roadshow brought a strong focus on cyber security awareness to Zenon High School in Sefikeng, where government officials, education leaders, and communication experts gathered to engage with the local community. The event formed part of a wider effort to strengthen digital literacy and promote safe internet use across Lesotho. The Minister of Information, Communication, Science, Technology and Innovation Ms. Nthati Moorosi led the delegation during the awareness campaign, underscoring the importance of protecting citizens in an increasingly digital environment. The initiative aimed to reach learners, teachers, parents, and community members with practical knowledge on cyber safety. It also highlighted the growing need for inclusive access to digital education and infrastructure development.
The District Administrator for Berea Mr. Phahlane Makoko welcomed the initiative and stressed its importance for communities such as Sefikeng, which continue to face challenges in technological advancement. He noted that limited access to digital tools and a lack of cyber security awareness have left many residents vulnerable to online scams and misinformation. He explained that these risks can affect education, business, and personal safety if not properly addressed. He also emphasized that programmes like the CTO Digital Roadshow play a key role in closing the digital divide. According to him, awareness campaigns are essential in ensuring that communities are not left behind in the global shift toward digital transformation.
Concerns about infrastructure and connectivity were also raised by the Member of Parliament for Ts’oana Makhulo constituency Mr. Teboho Nots’i. He highlighted that effective use of technology depends heavily on reliable mobile network coverage, which remains inconsistent in some areas. He pointed out that poor connectivity limits access to online education, financial services, and communication platforms. He stressed that improving infrastructure should be treated as a national priority to ensure equal opportunities for all citizens. He further noted that digital inclusion cannot be achieved without addressing the gaps in network expansion and service quality.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Lesotho Communications Authority Mr. Nizam Goolam explained that the purpose of the campaign is to ensure that all Basotho benefit from digital transformation regardless of where they live. He stated that the initiative focuses on building awareness around cyber security threats and promoting responsible internet usage. He also emphasized the importance of empowering citizens with the knowledge needed to protect themselves online while making use of digital opportunities for education and economic growth. He added that digital safety is no longer optional, but a necessary skill in modern society. His remarks reinforced the idea that awareness and education must go hand in hand with technological expansion.
The event at Zenon High School was structured to maximize participation across different groups within the community. Attendees were expected to break into three dedicated forums focusing on teachers, students, and the broader community, including parents, entrepreneurs, and local leaders. Each forum was designed to address specific challenges and provide tailored guidance on cyber security and digital engagement. Teachers were expected to receive training on integrating digital safety into classroom learning, while students were guided on responsible online behaviour. Community members were also set to receive practical advice on protecting themselves from cyber threats and using digital tools effectively.
As the programme progressed, discussions highlighted the urgent need for continued collaboration between government institutions, educational bodies, and communication regulators. Participants recognized that digital transformation requires more than infrastructure, as it also depends on awareness, education, and behavioural change. The CTO Digital Roadshow was presented as a practical platform for addressing these challenges at community level. It also served as a reminder that cyber security risks are growing alongside increased internet usage. The engagement created space for open dialogue on how best to build safer and more inclusive digital environments.
Before the closure of the event, Minister Ms. Nthati Moorosi was expected to deliver remarks reflecting on the discussions and outlining the government’s commitment to digital safety and inclusion. Her closing address was anticipated to reinforce the importance of protecting citizens in the digital space while expanding access to technology across all regions. The event marked another step in strengthening cyber security awareness in Lesotho and promoting responsible digital participation. It also demonstrated the value of bringing national digital initiatives directly into communities. The CTO Digital Roadshow continues to play a key role in shaping a safer and more connected future for Basotho through education, awareness, and collaboration.
