Vegan restaurants Luxembourg City: best veggie places to eat

A decade ago you might have been hard pushed to find vegetarian or vegan options on the menu, let alone restaurants serving only vegetarian or vegan dishes. Today the story in Luxembourg City and beyond is very different.

The choices listed in this article are mostly located in Luxembourg City but there are numerous restaurants across the country that offer great vegetarian/vegan options on the menu.

Beet – 32 Place Guillaume II

Plant based and proud, plus using locally-sourced, organic food and seasonal ingredients, Beet offers you the best in modern bistro chic.

Try out a plate of homemade vegan Mac ‘n’ Cheese, or Pate Lorraine, featuring peacan nuts, buttom mushrooms and chestnuts. Their tacos substitute meat for jackfruit, or you can tuck into a power bowl of brown rice, peanut butter dressing, edamame, orange-glazed carrots, guacamole, Terriyaki tofu, and chickpeas. They also do burgers and a kid’s menu.

Open Tuesday to Saturday 11.30 to 21.30 they have a lovely terrace overlooking the recently renovated square.

Sister restaurant Seed on 5 rue Chimay has freshly baked doughnuts, cakes and pastries, coffee, and light bites, plus fresh juices and cocktails. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00 until 21.00.

HaPP – 44 avenue John F Kennedy

HaPP says it is more than a restaurant – it’s a way of life, promoting energy and happiness. A different menu is on offer every day, and you can view all the ingredients they use for each dish (no additives and no artificial colouring).

Try their signature salads or hot and cold bowls. The Mexican warm bowl contains mixed greens, brown rice, spiced black beans, sweet corn, roasted paprika, tomato, marinated red onion and coriander. Topped with nachos and guacamole, lemon dressing and chilli. They also have a dish of the day.

Open from Monday to Friday 8.30 to 14.00 (coffee and cake until 15.00).

Fields – 6 Rue de Trèves, Findel

The relatively new haute cuisine vegetarian and vegan option from Michelin and green star chef René Mathieu, formerly at La Distllerie. This place is a treat rather than a regular hangout but reviewers rave about it.

Expect plant-based gastronomy based on local vegetables and finds in the forest, there’s a lunchtime set menu for €85 and an evening experience menu for €175. It’s open Wednesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner.

Levantine – 24 Rue Notre Dame

Opened by the engineer-turned restauranter Alaa-Eddine, the man behind Bao Bar, this Lebanese restaurant offers an amazing selection of vegetarian and vegan food, although it does have a few meat dishes. Tuck into variations of hummus including with wild mushroom, roasted cauliflower with tahini, garlic and lemon or carrots roasted with harissa and cumin, fried baby artichokes, falafel, or red pepper schnitzels.

VIDA – 35 avenue John F Kennedy

Almost next door you’ll find this Japanese fusion restaurant complete with a terrace. The menu boasts Bao Buns with tonkatsu, sauteed mushroom and pickled cucumber, Gyoza with cabbage and spring onion, Miso soup with edamame, tofu, seaweed and spring onions, or if you prefer, a selection of vegetarian sushi.

There are cocktails to wash it down with, including the Japanese Mule – sake, ginger beer, yuzu juice, and lychee puré. It’s open Tuesday to Thursday lunchtimes and evenings 11.00 to 14.00 and 18.00 to 22.00, on Fridays until midnight and Saturdays until 1.00.

Reed – 25 Boulevard Royal

Another tasty and 100% vegan place, Reed has chilli sin carne, currywurst, veganballs with Liege sauce, burgers and tacos. Perfect vegan comfort food.

It’s open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from 11.30 to 20.00, and Friday/Saturday from 11.30 to 22.00. You can order to takeaway or dine in at one of the lovely wooden tables indoors or on the small terrace.

Independent Cafe – 6 Boulevard FD Roosevelt

Bio and organic with a good selection of both vegan and vegetarian options from omlettes, portobello mushrooms stuff with goats cheese, a vegan quinoa burger, or an avocado and beetroot salad. The outfit also has a popular Sunday brunch with plenty of veggie choices.

Open Monday to Thursday 8.30 to 23.00, Fridays and Saturdays until midnight and on Sunday from 11.30 to 15.30 (although the kitchen times vary so check here).

Glow – 2 rue Xavier de Feller

This coffee place combines bakery with health food to offer vegan and vegetarian cuisine with a local touch.

Treat yourself to tea and cake or freshly squeezed juice, and relax with a book in their free library. For something more substantial check out the curries, gluten-free pasta and soups. The plant-based cakes and pastries make a delicious dessert.

Open Tuesday to Friday 08.00 to 14.30, Saturday 9.00 to 15.00, and once a month for Sunday brunch.

Rawdish – Place de Paris

100% bio and 100% fresh, if you’ve been out the night before you might want to try their beetroot, mango and goji berry hangover cure.

Fresh hot lunch bowls include red curry or pasta, and cold lunch bowls like the quinoa with cucumber, mango, carrots and coconut. The desserts include the delicious raw Sugar Daddy with peanut butter, cocoa and almonds. Open Monday to Friday 10.00 to 16.30.

The flagship store is at Place de Paris in the city, but they can deliver and have products in numerous stores in Luxembourg. You can check out the locations here.

Mesa Verde – 11 rue du Saint Esprit

Nestled in the cobbled streets above the Grund, you’ll find this seafood and vegetarian restaurant celebrating 35 years of business.

Bright and colourful decor combined with wooden tables spaced well for privacy, provide the perfect place to nibble on a plate of vitamin-packed crudities or try their veggie skewers served with a mustard and herb sauce, tofu curry or polenta and aubergine lasagne.

Nirvana Cafe – 1 Avenue de la Gare

Fancy something spicy? Look no further than Nirvana cafe which offers Indian and Pakistani vegan and lactose-free dining.

Nirvana Café is a social project dedicated to promoting veganism. All its produce is 100% vegan, without any trace elements. Sample momos, samosas, bhajees or try out their cauliflower masala curry. Comfy armchairs add to the cosy atmosphere. The dish of the day is a steal at just €11.80.

Open Monday to Sunday 12.00 to 15.00 and dinner 18.00 to 21.00.

Krishna Villas /Moien Masala – Rue du Fort Neipperg

Krishna Villas (one of five in Europe) is located close to the main railway station and has a good choice of vegetarian south Indian delicacies including idli (steamed fermented rice cakes), dosa (fermented lentil and rice served as a pancake), upma (savoury semolina), and thali (a selection of curries and pickles).

You can also sample some sweet delicacies, and it’s open Wednesday to Monday from 12.00 until 22.00.

Just a few doors up you’ll find a more recent addition – Moien Masala, set up by south Indians living in Luxembourg who brought over their chefs. You’ll get authentic flavours of the south, with plenty for vegetarian food including some clearly marked vegan dishes.

Tuck into some Mulligatwany soup with lentils or crispy cauliflower florets, and vada (savoury lentil doughnuts). There are plenty of idli and dosa (stuffed lentil and rice pancakes) filled with spicy potato or egg, or you can sample a paneer cheese tikka masala or a mushroom or cheese masala.

Open Tuesday to Friday for lunch from 12.00 to 14.00 and an extra hour at weekends, and in the evenings of the same days from 17.30 to 22.00.

Dakshin Indian Kitchen and Bar – 12 Rue Charles Darwin

Another new Indian restaurant offering dishes from across the country, this place also serves meat but has a good selection of veggie spicy food. You can opt for a three course selection or tuck into a starter of spinach and garlic soup or okra fries.

Mains include paneer butter masala, a Keralan-style black chickpea curry, or one with tamarind and garlic. There is also biryani, egg masala, and a selection of vegetarian dosas, a crispy rice and lental pancake stuffed with spiced potatoes and served with various vegetable curries and coconut chutneys.

Open Tuesday to Sunday for lunch 11.45-14.30 weekdays and 12.00 to 15.30 weekends, and in the evenings from 17.00 to 22.00.

Home of the Kanelbullar, or home-made cinnamon bun, you can also sample their gluten-free chocolate chip, pecan and cranberry cookies or variations on the house speciality, such as the pistachio bun, with a mug of hot chocolate.

The cakes and tarts are also out of this world, and mostly vegan, plus they serve the popular matcha latte. Take a seat at one of their pavement tables in the sun or in the snug interior if it’s raining, from Monday to Friday 8.00 to 17.00 and weekends 9.00 to 18.00.

Chiche – 20 avenue Pasteur (and 125 Rue d’Alzette, Esch/1A rue de Cessange, Leudelange)

In Limpertsberg, Leudelange, and Esch-sur-Alzette, this popular Syrian/Lebanese eatery has more than just falafel and hummus. Try mutabel, grilled aubergine puree with a smokey taste, or muhammara – a chilli paste with ground nuts served with bread.

Open for reservations to dine in and take away orders. The interior has traditional table seating or comfy sofas where you can share a few platters. Open Monday to Saturday for lunch from 12.00 to 14.00 and dinner from 18.00 to 22.00 (and the same hours Tuesday to Saturday at Esch and Leudelange).

Peppermint Restaurant – Kirchberg and Bonnevoie
Oobamint in Merl

Vietnamese and Malaysian specialities including pan-fried vegetable filled ravioli and tofu pad Thai, although the restaurant also serves meat and seafood dishes.

There are locations in three places, and It’s open seven days a week for lunch from 11.45 to 14.30 and dinner from 18.00 to 23.00.

Dean & David – 29 boulevard FDR and 45 avenue JFK

Smoothies, fresh juice, vegan and vegetarian salads and health bowls are the order of the day (meat and seafood options also available) at this franchise now open in Luxembourg at two locations, where you can grab a bite on the go or get your food delivered. Open Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 18.00 and at weekends from 10.30 to 19.00 in the city, and 11.00 to 20.00 Tuesday to Friday, 11.00 to 15.00 on Monday and 16.00 to 21.00 at weekends in Kirchberg.

Bitz a Kaffihaus – Diekirch

With a beautiful setting by the river, you can tuck into gorgeous vegetarian and vegan bowls and stock up on sewing supplies at this nifty little cafe. Located close to the station (for those looking to visit this town from the city), you can also tuck into waffles and crepes, and vegan tacos and a selection of mocktails.

Rucolino – Dudelange

Not in the city but this place is getting such rave reviews we have included it. Rucolino serves up beetroot carpaccio with vegan feta cheese and walnuts or vegetable and tofu gyoza for starters, followed by fried tofu burger with curry or wasabi sauce, fried polenta with spicy tomato sauce, focaccia stuffed with carrot, pesto and vegan mozarella, or with potato, onions and soy cream, plus an array of vegan pasta dishes.

Open Tuesday to Saturday for lunch (11.45 to 14.30) and dinner (18.30 to 23.00).

Beim Struwweltëntert – Tuntange

Whilst there are meat variations on the menu, this somewhat swanky haute-cuisine restaurant also has vegan and vegetarian options on its discovery menu. From eggs parfait to endives, mushroom cannelloni, and vegan desserts. Inside the tables are nicely spaced and the atmosphere, brighty and eclectic. It also has a grocery if you want to pick up some specialities.

Mesa in Esch-sur-Alzette gets great reviews for it’s locally sourced vegetable dishes cooked by Sylvie, whilst the Persian Foodbox in Luxembourg City and Kirchberg Infinity Centre has a great selection of vegetarian sauces served with rice, and ditto on the vegetarian selection at Ramen.

The Wooden Spoon is a small, women-run company that makes mostly vegan and vegetarian soups and salads, which can be delivered to your home or office (within a 10km radius from the city centre). Try out the Polish vegetable soup or the Turkish red lentil soup.
