Violence broke out in Dhandhuka town of Ahmedabad district after a 35-year-old man was killed in a dispute over a bike overtaking incident, triggering arson and vandalism by an enraged mob. Shops and vehicles were torched, forcing traders to shut their businesses as tensions escalated quickly.
Police, led by District Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Jat, rushed to the spot with a convoy and managed to bring the situation under control. The two main accused, Sameer and Rizwan, were arrested in connection with the murder, along with 15 others for their role in arson and vandalism.
The incident began when Dharmesh, a local resident, got into an altercation with two non-Hindu youths over bike overtaking. The clash turned violent, and he was stabbed to death, sparking outrage and a rapid escalation of violence in the area. An angry mob then targeted shops in the market, setting them on fire and prompting traders to close their establishments in haste.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and those detained are being questioned. Officials have appealed for calm, urging people not to spread rumours and to cooperate with authorities. The administration has said the situation is now under control, with security tightened to prevent any further unrest.
