16 Foreigners Including an American Rescued from Sailboat Adrift in Ustupu Panama

Panama:  A total of 16 people traveling on a sailboat from Colombia to Panama were rescued on Thursday morning after the vessel suffered mechanical failures that left it adrift.  The sailboat’s captain, Felipe Allendes, explained that as soon as they contacted the Special Boats Unit of the Caribbean Brigade of the National Border Service (Senafront), they received assistance.

Senafront located the vessel 40 nautical miles from the community of Ustupu, in the Guna Yala region, and towed it 25 miles to a safe port, primarily ensuring the physical safety of its occupants.  Among the occupants of the sailboat were people from: Argentina (2), Colombia (2), Norway (4), Germany (3), Austria (2), Switzerland (1), Denmark (2) and the United States (1).
