Wildfire burns 1.5 acres in Aroostook

An incendiary gunshot sparked a brushfire that burned about 1 1/2 acres near the Mapleton area Sunday afternoon, according to the Maine Forest Service.

The forest service warned Friday of increased spring fire danger.

Ranger Keith Draper responded, Maine Forest Rangers said in a release on social media. Forest service and local firefighters from the Mapleton, Castle Hill and Chapman Fire Department fought the fire. They did not specify the exact location.

Incendiary firearm rounds contain chemicals that are designed to ignite upon impact and set fire to flammable targets, according to WMTW.

Northern Maine rangers were attending an Ashland wildfire refresher training on Sunday afternoon, a separate release stated.
