The latest fatality happened on Monday at around 10.15pm on the N53 at Rassan, Dundalk, Co Louth, in a two-car collision.

The driver of one vehicle, a man in his late 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been removed to Louth County Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will take place, gardaí said.

A woman in her 20s, who was travelling in the second car, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The scene is preserved for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, and traffic diversions are currently in place.

A man in his 50s also died in Co Cork over the weekend.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses of the single-vehicle crash in Castletownroche yesterday.

The accident occurred at 12.50pm and the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was removed to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination was due to take place.

Meanwhile, a technical examination of the scene was carried out by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

In Dublin, a pedestrian in her 40s was seriously injured after she was hit by a bus shortly after 10am yesterday.

The incident happened in Terenure, Dublin 6. The woman was taken to Beaumont Hospital for treatment.

On Saturday, gardaí issued an appeal in relation to a fatal accident in Dublin the previous week, in which a woman in her 80s was hit by a bus.

They are appealing for witnesses following the incident at the junction of Main Street and Bath Place, Blackrock, Co Dublin, on Wednesday, March 25, shortly before 1.10pm.

The woman was taken to St Vincent’s University Hospital, where she died on Friday morning.

Gardaí also issued an appeal for witnesses of a single-vehicle crash on the R392 in Ballymahon, Co Longford, shortly after midnight on Sunday, March 29.

A man in his 30s, the sole occupant of the car, was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore for treatment. He died in hospital on Friday.

In the first four days of a Garda Roads Policing Operation being carried out over the Easter period, gardaí arrested 138 people for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

More than 3,000 drivers were detected speeding during the same period.

Notable speeds detected on Sunday included 138kmh in a 50kmh zone on Cashel Road, Cahir, Co Tipperary; 98kmh in a 60kmh zone on Dangan Road, Tullamore, Co Offaly; and 117kmh in an 80kmh zone on the N4, Doddsborough, Lucan, Co Dublin.

More than 310 people were found driving while holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt in the same timeframe, according to gardaí.
