Project Green CEO Joe Cuschieri says every Maltese resident should have access to a green space within a ten-minute walk from their home. 

Speaking on TVM’s XTRA, he explained that this accessibility is central to the agency’s vision of improving mental wellbeing, quality of life, and community engagement. 

At the heart of Project Green’s long-term strategy is the creation of “green corridors,” continuous, walkable routes that link different open spaces across Malta and Gozo, providing a seamless, accessible network for recreation, relaxation, and outdoor activity.

Since its establishment in 2023, Project Green has already completed 56 projects, ranging from urban park interventions to revitalisation of valleys and natural spaces. 

The agency not only maintains existing parks but also identifies and develops new green areas in consultation with local communities, ensuring each project reflects the specific needs and preferences of residents.

Architect Beverly Costa highlighted that the agency’s approach rests on two pillars: environmental and social. Sustainability is central, with a focus on indigenous plants, water-saving techniques, and reduced reliance on turf, while spaces are designed to encourage residents to spend more time outdoors,whether for leisure, exercise, or remote work. 

Contact with nature, she noted, supports both physical and mental health.

Cuschieri added that Project Green is now managing a portfolio of around 150 projects, including large-scale sites like White Rocks, Manoel Island, and Selmun. 

The planned green corridors will not only connect parks and open areas but also create new opportunities for recreation, outdoor art, and community events, turning Malta into a greener, more walkable, and accessible country for everyone.
