POLICE INTENSIFY EASTER ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

BY ZINHLE DLAMINI (INTERN)

MBABANE– The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS), in collaboration with the Road Safety Council of Eswatini, has launched a nationwide road safety awareness campaign aimed at reducing accidents during the busy Easter weekend.

The campaign, unveiled this week, comes at a time when traffic volumes are expected to surge as emaSwati travel across the country to attend religious gatherings and family events. Authorities say the initiative seeks to promote responsible driving behaviour and minimise road fatalities during one of the year’s peak travel periods.

Also present at the launch were key stakeholders, including Eswatini National Fire and Rescue Services and His Majesty’s Correctional Services, underscoring a coordinated national approach to road safety. The multi-agency effort is designed to enhance visibility on the roads while reinforcing compliance with traffic laws.

National Commissioner of Police, Manoma V. Masango, urged motorists and pedestrians alike to exercise extreme caution. He emphasised the importance of adhering to road regulations, including observing speed limits, avoiding reckless driving, and remaining vigilant at all times.

Masango called upon all road users to cooperate fully with traffic officers deployed across the country and to comply with all road safety measures in place. He further highlighted that this is a critical period, and collective responsibility is key to preventing unnecessary loss of life.

How the campaign will be implemented includes intensified roadblocks, increased patrols on major highways, and public education initiatives targeting both drivers and pedestrians. Officers have already been deployed in strategic locations to monitor traffic flow and enforce regulations.

Why the campaign matters, authorities say, is the recurring trend of road accidents during holiday periods, often attributed to speeding, fatigue, and non-compliance with traffic laws. By strengthening awareness and enforcement, stakeholders aim to ensure that travellers reach their destinations safely.

The police have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding lives and have called on the public to prioritise safety above all else. As the Easter weekend approaches, the message remains clear: responsible road use can save lives.
