Palau’s ‘Laundry to Landscape’ Taps Greywater Goldmine for Climate-Proof Farms

Overview:

A simple shift in how households use water could transform farming in Palau. The Bureau of Agriculture is promoting “Laundry to Landscape,” a low-cost system that redirects greywater from washing machines straight to crops—offering a practical solution to drought, rising costs, and climate pressures.

Turn everyday laundry into irrigation: Palau pilots low-cost greywater systems to boost food security, conserve water, and climate-proof island agriculture

KOROR, Palau  — “Divert 25-50 gallons of water per load of laundry directly into your landscape!” Jodean Remengesau, director of the Bureau of Agriculture, champions this simple hack as a game-changer for drought-prone islands.

In a resource-strapped era where every drop counts, Palau is eyeing an underutilized stream: nutrient-rich greywater from showers and laundry rinses. Redirecting subsurface water to food crops like mature fruit trees, upland taro, and livestock feed could climate-proof farm infrastructure without wasting a gallon.

The concept, dubbed “Laundry to Landscape,” sidesteps storage limits — water can’t sit for more than 24 hours — by channeling it fresh through discreet, customized subsurface pipes to mulch basins around trees, vines, and perennials. No sprays, no surface runoff, just direct root delivery.

“Our Laundry to Landscape system is simple, discrete, and inexpensive,” Remengesau said. A one-day installation by local plumbers turns washing machines into irrigation powerhouses, creating a sustainable system that nourishes plants craving it most.

Key safeguards ensure safety: Stick to biodegradable soaps low in sodium and phosphorus. “Review wastewater regulations affecting specific site area,” Remengesau urges, noting the approach is pilotable and scalable for Babeldaob’s new housing developments and state farming leases.

It could even spark jobs — think plumbers and educators training on product labeling — in a field AI can’t readily touch. As resource constraints tighten amid climate shifts, Remengesau sees optimization as survival: Greywater isn’t waste; it’s farm fuel.
