NEW IMPORT RULES TO PROTECT EMASWATI FROM SUBSTANDARD GADGETS

BY PHUMELELE GAMEDZE

MBABANE — As emaSwati increasingly rely on digital devices for daily life, the Eswatini Post and Telecommunications Corporation and Eswatini Revenue Service have introduced new import regulations starting April 13, 2026, to protect consumers from unsafe gadgets.

The new regulations will apply to a wide range of electronic communication devices such as smartphones, smart televisions, laptops, and other imported gadgets. Under the agreement, all individuals and businesses involved in importing these products will be required to obtain permits before bringing them into the country.

According to EPTC representative Fisiwe Vilane, the decision follows growing concerns over the quality of devices being sold locally. She highlighted that some mobile phones on the market have mismatched internal components and external covers, raising serious issues around functionality, durability, and consumer safety.

Vilane explained that the introduction of mandatory permits will ensure that only approved and verified gadgets reach consumers. She emphasized that the initiative is not only about regulation, but about safeguarding the public from unreliable and potentially harmful products.

Authorities will enforce the new measures across all points of entry, where inspections will be conducted to confirm compliance. Both travelers and importers using land borders or airports will be required to present valid permits for their devices.

The partnership between EPTC and ERS signals a coordinated effort to promote accountability within the communications sector while enhancing consumer confidence in the market. It is also expected to support legitimate businesses by creating a fair and regulated trading environment.

As the implementation date approaches, stakeholders are urged to align with the new requirements to avoid disruptions and contribute to a safer, more reliable digital landscape for emaSwati.
