Court orders 5-day custody for Oli and Lekhak over Gen Z protest crackdown

Kathmandu, March 29

Chairman of the CPN UML and former prime minister KP Sharma Oli, and leader of the Nepali Congress and former home minister Ramesh Lekhak, have been ordered by the court to be kept in custody for further investigation.

According to the information officer of the Kathmandu District Court, Ananda Prasad Shrestha, on Sunday, the bench of Judge Ananda Prasad Shrestha at the Kathmandu District Court granted permission to extend their detention by five days. Government attorneys had requested a 10-day remand for investigation.

A commission formed to investigate the crackdown on the Gen Z protests on September 8 and 9 recommended initiating criminal proceedings against both Oli, the then prime minister, and Lekhak, the then home minister.

Based on that recommendation, arrest warrants were issued, and both were detained on Saturday morning.

On Sunday, Lekhak appeared in court in person, while Oli, due to illness, attended virtually through Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
