Simple Ways To Avoid Getting Lost While Hiking In Wyoming

2026 has been a goofy weather year, and who really knows how it will be as we continue to flip the calendar pages. One thing I’ve noticed is that people are getting out and enjoying nature. If you’re walking the trails inside city limits, it’s not very likely that you’re going to get lost and need help finding your way, but if you’re out in the mountains or on a trail somewhere you’re not familiar with, you may.

I’ve always prided myself on being good with directions. I can usually find a landmark and know which way I’m traveling, or at least have a good idea of how to get where I’m going. Other people who live in my house have a difficult time knowing which way is North, South, East, or West. I’m sure some reading this may be the same, and get really nervous when you’re traveling without your phone, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

When you’re choosing where to go hiking, it’s a good idea to know the general location before you head out. When you arrive, before you leave your vehicle, make mental notes of your location. Which way are you facing when you begin your hike? Are there significant landmarks nearby? Do you have a map of the area and know how to read it? Is your phone charged?

If, by chance, you happen to be hiking outside of quality wireless coverage and get lost, there are some things to remember.

First, don’t panic. When panic sets in, you’re probably not going to think clearly or rationally.

Second, look for familiar landmarks that may help you remember the path you took to get to where you are.

Third, if you’re turned around and can’t remember which way is which, there’s a simple way to help you get back on track. It’s called the Shadow Stick Method, and it can be a life-saving move. The method requires only a couple of sticks, a couple of rocks, the sun, and 15 to 20 minutes.

To properly execute the Shadow Stick Method.

  • Place a straight stick vertically into the ground.
  • Mark the tip of the shadow with a rock or other object.
  • Wait 15 to 20 minutes, and mark the new location of the tip of the shadow with a different rock or object.
  • Draw a line between the two rocks. This line will run roughly West to East.
  • Stand with the first rock on the left side of your body, and the second on your right. You’re now facing North, and you just made a compass with a stick and a rock.

Here’s a quick video that shows the Shadow Stick Method in action:
