One of the oldest buildings from the Condominium era in Luganville is now facing its final days as demolition work begins.
The building, widely known as Alice Store, located on the eastern end of Luganville town, is currently being torn down under the coordination of Santo Earthworks.
Alice Store has long been a familiar landmark for many residents, but its condition worsened after it was severely damaged by a fire in 2020.
Reports at the time indicated that the fire was likely caused by faulty electrical wiring, leading to significant losses for the property owner and his family.
Owner Jeaques Tronquet told VBTC News that the fire caused extensive damage and resulted in the loss of many valuable belongings.
Mr Tronquet had applied for a demolition permit following the incident, but the process was delayed for some time before approval was finally granted earlier this year through the Public Works Department.
He also confirmed that there is already interest from a potential buyer to purchase the lease once the demolition is completed.
Demolition work is expected to take approximately two months, with crews already removing internal structures and breaking down walls of the old building.
