President Kiir returns from South Africa visit

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has returned to Juba following what officials describe as an official and productive visit to South Africa.

According to a statement shared on the official Facebook page of the Office of the President on Sunday, Kiir was received at Juba International Airport by a crowd of youths and women welcoming the outcomes of the trip.

The visit followed up on the C5 Plus engagement chaired by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, focusing on peace implementation, elections, and bilateral cooperation.

The statement says discussions were held at both the head-of-state and bilateral levels. Leaders agreed on key positions, including moving ahead with elections as scheduled, continuing dialogue on electoral matters, and respecting the independence of judicial processes.

President Kiir and his delegation also held meetings with senior South African officials, including Deputy President Paul Mashatile, alongside other government representatives and advisors involved in South Sudan’s peace process.

Talks placed emphasis on the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement, inclusive dialogue, and preparations for credible elections. The president reaffirmed the country’s readiness to proceed with elections and his commitment to peace, security, and democratic progress.

The statement adds that both sides explored opportunities for cooperation in sectors such as mining, aviation, agriculture, healthcare, education, tourism, and oil. Plans are also underway for a South Sudan–South Africa business summit in Juba.

Officials say the visit builds on longstanding relations between the two countries, dating back to agreements signed in 2012 and 2013.

The government describes the trip as successful, with follow-up actions expected. President Kiir also expressed appreciation to the government and people of South Africa for their hospitality, saying he returns committed to delivering on the outcomes for the people of South Sudan.
