Council targets 6000 trees

The Nasinu Town Council, in partnership with the Ministry of Forestry, Rotary Club of Suva Central, Valelevu Police Station and Rotaract, marked the International Day of Forests with a successful tree-planting drive in front of the Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (Fiji) in Nasinu.

A total of 120 trees were planted yesterday, marking the first step toward the council’s ambitious goal of planting 6000 trees across Nasinu in 2026.

The initiative underscored the council’s commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship and community pride.

Special Administrator Salesh Kumar opened the event by emphasising the importance of balancing urban growth with conservation.

“Forests are more than trees,” Mr Kumar said.

“They are the lungs of our planet, the guardians of biodiversity, and the silent protectors of our climate.

“Today’s planting drive is not just symbolic – it is a commitment to future generations that we will leave behind a town that breathes clean air, shelters wildlife and inspires pride.”

Mr Kumar commended the collective spirit shown by community members and partner organisations and urged residents to nurture the saplings and expand the initiative across Nasinu.

“Imagine a town where every street corner has shade, every schoolyard has greenery, and every household feels connected to the environment. That vision begins with us, here and now.”

Senior Forestry Officer Sonu Dutt highlighted the ecological importance of the initiative.

“Each tree planted today contributes to Fiji’s national reforestation goals,” Mr Dutt said.

“Beyond carbon absorption, these trees will provide shade, improve soil health and enhance biodiversity.
