The comedian was referring to a wing of the MAGA movement that opposes Trump’s actions in Iran, in part because of the belief that Israel dragged the United States into the war.
Maher also referenced the resignation of Joe Kent, the now-former director of the National Counterterrorism Center, who he accused of “listening to too much Tucker Carlson.” Kent said in his resignation letter this week that he believes the U.S. started the war “due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.”
“And now the big answer is ‘Israel made us do it, we’re Israel’s bitch,’” Maher said. “I don’t think we’re Israel’s bitch, I think we’re Israel’s ally.”
Maher previously said he supports Trump’s decision to attack Iran as long as there aren’t “boots on the ground.”
“Also, this week, war,” said Maher during his March 7 show, a week after the war began. “Did you hear about that thing? We bombed Iran and it’s going on. Now, if you expect me to say I hate it, I don’t. Sorry! When he puts boots on the ground, yeah, then I’ll hate it. Now, I know too many happy Iranian Americans, sorry.”
