Overview:
Palau is rethinking how it talks to its youth about health—swapping dense pamphlets for interactive, youth-led learning. A new campaign is bridging the information gap by combining hands-on activities, mental health support, and the influence of local content creators to make wellness more relatable and accessible for the next generation.

KOROR, Palau (March 17, 2026) — “In my opinion, information on health, nutrition, and overall wellness is not always easily accessible to young people in Palau,” said Mirang Subediang, a UN Online Volunteer for the United Nations Multi-Country Office and the office’s youth focal point.
Health pamphlets and online resources often baffle youth with technical jargon suited for adults, Subediang said. She pointed to short-form videos on TikTok and YouTube Shorts as culprits in shrinking attention spans among Generation Alpha kids and teens.
“This campaign and event aim to respond to these challenges by using a participatory approach to learning,” she said. “Instead of relying on a traditional teacher-student dynamic, the activities are designed to be interactive, tailored to their level of understanding, and delivered in a way that resonates with them.”
Students tried organic foods to share with families and brainstormed youth-led after-school fitness proposals. “The goal is that these ideas may eventually inform programs developed by relevant stakeholders, ensuring they are not only inclusive, but also youth-driven,” Subediang said.
A mental health session taught emotion regulation and coping strategies. “Additionally, the mental and emotional health session provided students with strategies to better regulate their emotions and introduced healthier coping mechanisms they can turn to when facing challenges,” she added.
Local content creators and health experts boosted engagement. “The involvement of local content creators and partners was instrumental to the overall success of the event,” Subediang said. Palau’s unique culture demands relatable messengers, she noted, with creators amplifying expert advice rooted in island values.
