Operations at Colonial War Memorial Hospital have returned to normal following the successful restoration of its lift systems, according to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.
The lifts, which were previously out of service, were repaired last week, improving access for patients, visitors, and medical personnel.
Assistant Minister for Health, Penioni Ravunawa, acknowledged the disruption caused and expressed regret for the inconvenience faced by patients, their families, and healthcare workers who continued providing critical services during the outage.
Authorities revealed that the damage to the lifts resulted from acts of vandalism by certain visitors. Officials emphasized that such actions impose heavy financial costs on the healthcare system, as repairing specialized hospital equipment requires significant resources.
Beyond the financial strain, the damage also contributed to delays in patient care and increased pressure on already burdened staff.
The Ministry is urging the public to respect hospital property and recognize the importance of maintaining healthcare facilities as safe and functional spaces.
In response to the incident, steps are being taken to tighten security, including increased monitoring at key entry points within hospital grounds.
These measures form part of broader efforts to enhance infrastructure, protect patients, and ensure consistent delivery of healthcare services across the country.
