MORRISVILLE, Vt. (WCAX) – Citing costs and a declining birth rate, Copley Hospital says it’s closing its birthing center.
They say less than half of Lamoille County birthing families are choosing Copley to have their babies.
Current prenatal patients will get information on how the closure impacts them and their birthing plan.
This comes after Vermont health care regulators have sounded the alarm on the cost of care in Vermont.
“Local, safe, patient-centered care for birthing should not be something rural families have to fight for. It should just be a given. This is a very bad decision. This is removing access to life-saving care. That access is gone,” said health professional and former patient Eva Zaret.
The hospital says the Women’s Center will remain open and that it will continue to offer prenatal and postpartum care. No closure date for the birthing center was announced.
