A Woman of Substance

9pm, Channel 4
The rags-to-riches period drama continues with young Emma Harte (Jessica Reynolds) choosing a secret relationship with her employer’s son, Edwin Fairley (Ewan Horrocks), over taking the chance to move to Leeds. It can’t end well, though, as present-day Emma (Brenda Blethyn) still holds a grudge with the Fairleys. It continues on Thursday with Lenny Rush giving a heartbreaking performance as Emma’s brother. The Marlow Murder Club

8pm, U&Drama
When the much-beloved mayor of Marlow drops dead in the middle of a town council meeting, everyone present is a suspect. It’s the perfect locked-room mystery to challenge DS Tanika Malik’s now established crime-solving team, and the perfect series three opener for this cosy crime show. Ellen E Jones

Beyond the Brush

8pm, Sky Arts

“This painting doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.” James Payne is an art historian who helps to tell the story of Edvard Munch’s The Scream, as part of a series that takes a closer look at well-known paintings. Perhaps Munch’s experience of his father’s depression, mother’s death and sister’s schizophrenia can explain the unsettling image. HR

Hostage

9pm, BBC Two
The final episode of this enthralling series about Islamic State kidnappings follows the ongoing story of journalist John Cantlie. After his fellow hostage Jim Foley was beheaded, many in the UK were shocked to see Cantlie parroting IS propaganda. Was he simply trying to survive? The issue is explored carefully and with nuance. The Stolen Girl

9pm, ITV1
Was it wise – or even ethical – to write an article suggesting that Elisa’s (Denise Gough) religious commune upbringing led to her daughter’s kidnapping? Regardless, intrepid reporter Selma (Ambika Mod) isn’t backing down. She is determined to untangle the truth, and in this penultimate episode she discovers a key link between Elisa and a fatal traffic accident. EEJ

We Might Regret This

10pm, BBC Two
The finale of a criminally short four-episode comedy series is a hen do from hell story (always good fun, even if this one borders on excruciating). But while it causes Freya to question the whole wedding, elsewhere Abe tells his ex-wife, Jane, that he’s finally ready to sell their house. All the while, the run-up to the big day is being sponsored on social media. HR
