Players and officials from Oakleigh Cannons FC and Heidelberg United FC paid tribute to Dimitris Ionnas ahead of their match, observing a minute’s silence and wearing black armbands to honour his memory.
The moving tribute took place before the game between the two Greek Australian clubs, as supporters filled the stands and joined the moment of silence, demonstrating their respect for a man who had left a lasting impression on the local community.
For a brief moment, the match paused as players and club officials stood united in remembrance. The atmosphere in the stadium reflected the deep affection felt for Ionnas, whose sudden passing shocked family, friends and members of Melbourne’s Greek community.
Dimitris Ionnas, the brother of prominent Oakleigh Cannons figure Akis Ionnas, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 49 on Sunday, 25 January.
He leaves behind grieving parents, siblings, nephews, cousins and many friends who are still struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.

Those who knew Dimitris remember him as a devoted brother and friend who had a deep love for sport, his local club and the time he spent with family and community.
In a statement, Oakleigh Cannons FC acknowledged the special connection Dimitris had with the club, noting that his passing leaves a significant void not only for his family but also for the broader Greek and football communities of Melbourne.
During the match between Oakleigh Cannons and Heidelberg United, the game momentarily became more than just a sporting contest. It became a tribute to a man whose life, though cut short, left an enduring mark on the hearts of those who knew him.
