A 64-YEAR-OLD mechanic in Pahang has become the latest victim of a sophisticated investment scam, losing almost RM250,000 after being lured into a scheme that falsely promised high returns from “American Coins” and shares.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the victim was approached by an unknown individual via WhatsApp, who offered what appeared to be a lucrative short-term investment opportunity.
“Between September 2 and November 3, 2025, the victim made six transfers to three separate bank accounts provided by the suspect using his personal savings,” Yahaya explained.
Despite transferring substantial sums, the mechanic did not receive any returns, and all attempts to reach the perpetrator were unsuccessful, prompting the victim to realise he had been defrauded.
The victim lodged a report at the Temerloh district police headquarters on Saturday.
Authorities have confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a possible sentence of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, whipping, and a fine upon conviction.
Yahaya cautioned the public to remain vigilant when approached with investment opportunities via messaging platforms and stressed the importance of verifying the legitimacy of any financial offer before making payments.
This incident underscores the growing prevalence of online investment scams in Malaysia and serves as a warning to individuals to exercise due diligence when dealing with unsolicited financial schemes. – March 15, 2026
