Air India, Air India Express to shift operations to Guwahati Airport’s new terminal from March 16

Guwahati: Air India and Air India Express will shift all their flight operations at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati from Terminal 1 to the newly inaugurated Terminal 2 starting March 16. Following the transition, both airlines will operate a total of 38 daily flights from the new terminal.

According to an airline release, the first Air India flight to arrive at Terminal 2 will be AI879 from Delhi, while its return service AI880 to Delhi will be the first departure from the new terminal. Meanwhile, the first Air India Express flight to land at Terminal 2 will be IX1517 from Kolkata, and its onward service to Imphal will mark the airline’s first departure from the new facility.

At present, Air India operates two daily return flights between Delhi and Guwahati. Air India Express connects Guwahati with 17 daily flights to cities including Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jaipur, and Kolkata.

Airport authorities said ground teams at Terminal 2 will assist passengers to ensure a smooth transition during the shift. The airport currently serves 21 domestic destinations and three international routes—Bangkok, Paro, and Singapore—and handles more than 130 aircraft movements daily.

Officials said the additional capacity at Terminal 2 is expected to strengthen Guwahati’s role as a regional aviation hub linking the Northeast with mainland India and Southeast Asia.

The new terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 20, 2025. Commercial operations at the terminal began on February 22, when Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the first batch of passengers. At present, SpiceJet and Akasa Air are already operating flights from Terminal 2.

The new terminal, designed by renowned architect Nuru Karim, draws inspiration from Assam’s kopou phool (foxtail orchid) and incorporates more than 140 metric tonnes of bamboo. It also features design elements inspired by Assam’s bholuka bamboo craftsmanship and the architectural traditions of the Apatani tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, reflecting the cultural identity of the Northeast.

Terminal 2 has already won the International Architecture Award 2025 for successfully combining regional identity with modern infrastructure.

The airport is operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited through its subsidiary Guwahati International Airport Limited, which also manages airports in Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Lucknow, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Mangaluru.
