CASPER, Wyo. — Natrona County residents are facing a volatile weather weekend as a powerful cold front prepares to sweep through the region, bringing high winds and a sharp temperature drop before a record-breaking warming trend arrives next week.
The National Weather Service in Riverton has maintained High Wind Warnings for much of central Wyoming through Saturday. Localized gusts in the Casper area are expected to reach between 45 and 65 mph following sunrise, creating difficult travel conditions along the Interstate 25 and Wyoming Highway 220 corridors. Forecasters indicate that while breezy conditions will persist through Wednesday, Saturday likely marks the final day of the season’s most intense 60-plus mph wind events.
As the cold front moves south from Montana, a rapid transition in precipitation is expected Saturday evening. Meteorologists project rain showers will switch to snow after 9 p.m. in the Casper area. While snowfall totals east of the Continental Divide have been adjusted downward, Natrona County could still see 1 to 2 inches of accumulation by Sunday morning. Experts note the moisture may arrive in the form of brief but intense snow squalls, which could lead to suddenly slick roads and reduced visibility.
The most immediate impact for Casper residents will be a dramatic plunge in temperatures. Sunday’s highs are forecasted to struggle near 28 degrees, a significant drop from Saturday’s high of 60. With north winds continuing at 15 to 25 mph, wind chill values are expected to dip as low as zero degrees on Sunday morning.
However, the wintry conditions will be short-lived. A high-pressure ridge building over the western United States is expected to bring a surge of unseasonably warm air to the Cowboy State starting Tuesday. Confidence remains high that temperatures will soar well above seasonal averages, with highs in Casper potentially reaching the mid-70s by Wednesday and near 80 degrees by Friday. This shift represents a 50-degree temperature swing within a five-day period and may challenge long-standing record highs for the third week of March.
