MBABANE– The Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS) is conducting a strategic VAT compliance review targeting the wholesale and retail sectors to ensure businesses adhere to the VAT Act 2011. The initiative aims to promote fairness, transparency and accountability in the country’s tax system.
The exercise identifies discrepancies such as inflated input VAT, overstated refund claims, misrepresented sales and abuse of preferential treatment statuses. ERS Commissioner General, Brightwell Nkambule, emphasises that the review is meant to guide businesses towards compliance.
“ERS is committed to supporting compliant taxpayers and promoting a culture of integrity, fairness, and accountability in the business environment,” Nkambule says. “We urge all businesses to review their VAT returns and voluntarily correct any errors before enforcement measures are applied.”
The review applies to all taxpayers in the wholesale and retail sectors. ERS reminds businesses that violations, including submission of inaccurate VAT returns, could result in penalties such as cancellation of VAT registration, double tax penalties .
Taxpayers are encouraged to take immediate action if they have previously submitted returns that are inaccurate, whether by omission or commission. Voluntary compliance will reduce the risk of penalties and reinforce a culture of responsible business practices.
“This initiative is not only about enforcement but also about creating an environment where businesses can operate confidently while contributing to the country’s economic growth,” Nkambule adds.
ERS says the VAT compliance exercise is part of its broader strategy to ensure a level playing field for all businesses, strengthen public trust and improve the efficiency of tax administration. Businesses requiring guidance or support are urged to contact ERS directly.
